Open the stage curtain on your life
Telling your story is a bit like opening the stage curtain on your life. It’s often a cathartic experience as it focusses your mind on what really matters to you. It can help you realign with your values and resolve stuff, and even start to mend relationships.
It’s not just about you
You may feel a bit scared initially when you start revisiting old feelings, or you may feel guilty about putting time and effort into something that is “all about you”. But it’s actually not just about you – it’s about key events and experiences that have shaped your life. Your story includes your relationships and interactions with people around you, so your personal journey is deeply connected to the stories of others, rather than solely focussed on you.
Emotional benefits of sharing our stories
This simple act of recording your story is going to be powerful and transformative in your life. The more you allow yourself to go along with the process of opening that stage curtain on your life, the more you will gain from some surprising emotional benefits.
Recording your story can also help you get clearer on your life goals, and help you understand your relationships better too. You get to unpack stuff that you may not have realised you needed to, so it can be a truly healing experience.
Start with a small task
Start with a small task, such as deciding what themes or events you’d like to cover in your life story.
This may include:
- early childhood memories
- moving abroad or moving house
- holidays and special celebrations
- becoming a parent
- hopes and dreams for the future
This task should only take about 10 minutes or so to do, and if you get the themes sorted you’ll be off to a great start. One theme can span across several decades, and there are no rules here – it’s your story and will be passed on to future generations – what a gift that is.
Make it happen in 2025
The process has been started, so you’re now ready to make a plan to start recording your story, or the story of a loved one in 2025. Do it for the grandkids, and for their grandkids.
You won’t regret doing it, but you may regret not doing it.
