Festive family rituals and traditions

Most families have something special and unique to their family that they do every year around Christmas time.

For example – my sister is the family table decorations maker (and shortbread baker!).  The photo below shows one of the lovely set she did last year.  The shortbread didn’t last long enough for a photo!  Maybe you have a chief Christmas cake maker, or a special tree decorating event each year in your house? Lights on first or last?

Capturing your family traditions on camera is a great way to make sure they remain part of the family culture for future generations.

What’s a unique Christmas ritual in your family?

Remember to capture it on camera this year so that it’s remembered for many years to come.

Start asking questions at Christmas

When you gather together for the festivities, talk with your parents & grandparents to record some memories and stories from their lives.  It’s easy if you:

  • Use your phone camera to record their responses.
  • Try not to overthink it.
  • Keep it casual – you’re just having a conversation.
  • Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect.

3 questions to ask them:

1. Do you have any special Christmas memories as a child?

2. How did you meet Grandma/Grandad/Mum/Dad?

3. What advice would you give to younger generations today?
